The Gwili Railway is a historic railway line in Carmarthen, Wales, considered one of the most picturesque preserved routes in the United Kingdom. It spans approximately 7.2 kilometers and follows the course of the River Gwili through agricultural land and wooded hills.
History and Development
The original line opened in 1860 and connected Carmarthen to Aberystwyth. After closing for passenger traffic in 1965 and the tracks being removed in 1975, the Gwili Railway Preservation Company was established in 1975 to preserve a section of the former line. It began operations in 1978, becoming the first preserved standard gauge railway line in Southwest Wales.
Vehicles and Exhibitions
The Gwili Railway has a collection of steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and historic carriages maintained and operated by volunteers. Special attention is given to the Taff Vale Railway No.28 steam locomotive, a historic Welsh locomotive that was restored to operation.
